Three Kent players have been selected for international duty as a consequence of their performances for the county and being nominated for England trials by the Kent Schools FA.
The England Girls Under 15 squad is in its infancy and Alessia Russo (St Simon Stock School, Maidstone) becomes the first player from Kent to be chosen. She was a member of the Kent under 14 Girls Squad that reached last season’s national final.
By contrast, Kent Schools have a long tradition of providing players for the England Under 18 Squad, the most notable recent example being Chris Smalling, who as a result of his displays in schools’ football was scouted by Fulham – the rest is history! This season, Tom Hadler (Simon Langton Grammar School, Canterbury) and Josh Woolley (Maplesden Noakes School, Maidstone) have been named in the England Squad.
Congratulations to all three players. Their selection is further evidence of the strength of schools’ football in Kent, and of the pathways that exist from schools’ football to the top levels of the game.
